上段の印象的な女性の写真はリチャード・カーンのもの。

1980年ニューヨークで結成される。デトロイトの伝説的なバンドMC5のギタリスト”フレッド・ソニック・スミス”とレゲエ・アーティストの名前に多い”ユース”から”ソニック・ユース”SONIC YOUTHと名付けたと言われています。カオス的なノイズ、実験的でアート志向な音楽性でアンダー・グラウンドで地道に活動したことはインディー・シーンに多大な貢献をしたと言えます。彼等のアート志向は多岐に渡っていて色々な分野のアーティストとの交流が深く、キム・コードン(b)(V0)はカリフォルニア大学でアートを専攻していたことから後に立ち上げる 『X-girl』 の創始者 (デザイナー)としても知られています。1990年メジャー大手ゲフィン・レコードよりその後のUSグランジ、オルタナティブ・ロックシーンの黄金期を作る先駆けになる『Goo』(グー) をリリースし大成功を収めます。2011年以降バンドは休止状態であるが今現在も多くの若手バンドよりリスペクトされています。
